The borough got its name from the Saddle River, which flows through it. Saddle River is a tributary of the Passaic River, which was named after a stream in Saddell in Scotland.

The borough is bordered by Woodcliff Lake, Hillsdale, Upper Saddle River, Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale, Waldwick, Ramsey, and Washington Township.
