Rutherford had a population of 18061 according to the 2010 Census. This was a decline of about 49 people in comparison to the 2000 Census, which recorded about 18110 people.

Rutherford was formed through an act of legislature in the State of New Jersey in 1881. Parts of Union Township were used to create the new Rutherford borough. The borough was named after John Rutherford, who was a US Senator and a landowner in the region.

Rutherford is also referred to as the First Borough of Bergen County and the Borough of Trees.

The Lenni Lenape Indians settled on the Ridge before Walling Van Winkle arrived in 1687. The Union Avenue, which runs from the Meadowlands to Passaic River, might have been an Indian trail back in those days. However, it’s also possible that it was a property border as referenced in the 1668 land grant from Philip Carteret (a governor at the time), to Jon Berry.

In those early days, the land that we now call Rutherford was a portion of New Barbadoes Township, which was a portion of Essex County between 1693 and 1710 when Bergen County came to be. In 1826, the land was ceded to Lodi Township, and when Hudson County was created in 1840, the areas that are presently Lyndhurst, North Arlington, East Rutherford, and Rutherford were made a part of Harrison Township. But eventually, the land was made part of Bergen County in 1852 and later became Union Township.
